Pentosepentose[′pen‚tōs]Pentosea monosaccharide that contains five carbon atoms per molecule. In nature, pentoses do not occur in the free state but are present in various glycosides and polysaccharides that are commonly found in plants; these include arabinose and xylose. The pentoses ribose and 2-deoxyribose are constituents of nucleic acids. Nucleoside-diphosphate sugars participate in the insertion of arabinose and xylose into complex carbohydrates. Ribose in the form of ribose-5-phosphate, which takes part in the biosynthesis of nucleotides, is formed as an intermediate product in photosynthesis and in the pentose-phosphate cycle. Pentoses are converted by mineral acids into furfurol, a valuable raw material in the chemical industry. pentosepentose[pen´tōs]pen·tose(pen'tōs),pentose(pĕn′tōs′, -tōz′)pen·tose(pen'tōs)pentoseA sugar with five carbon atoms in each molecule. The ‘backbone’ of DNA on each side of the helix consists of a chain of pentose sugars alternating with phosphate groups. The sugar in DNA is 2-deoxyribose, and in RNA is ribose. The NUCLEOTIDE chain is formed by linking the 5’ position of one pentose ring to the 3’ position on the next via a phosphate group. 5’ and 3’ are used to indicate the ends of a DNA fragment and the directions in which the ‘backbones’ run.pentosea monosaccharide with five carbon atoms.pentose
