Trolley Truck

a freight transport vehicle that is supplied with electric power from an overhead, or trolley, wire. Trolley trucks can be used effectively in cities that have a well-developed overhead contact system. In such cities trolley trucks are often used for regularly scheduled freight transport along established routes at night, when there is no passenger trolleybus traffic. To make it possible for them to operate without an electric power supply, trolley trucks are sometimes equipped with an internal combustion engine, which enables them to move through areas that adjoin the loading and unloading sites. Trolley trucks and trolleybuses are similar in the design of their electric power systems; assemblies similar to those in motor vehicles are used in the running gear, steering system, and brake system of trolley trucks. The freight-carrying capacity of a trolley truck is usually 5–8 tons, the power rating of the traction motor is 100–110 kilowatts, and the maximum speed is 60 km/hr.
