Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect[su̇n¦yä‚ef zel′dō‚vich i‚fekt] (astronomy) A change in the spectrum of the cosmic background radiation in the direction of galaxy clusters, whereby the radiation is less intense at wavelengths longer than 1.4 millimeters and more intense at shorter wavelengths as the result of hot gas in the clusters.
