The folded crystalline rocks of the island are covered by lava. There are still some volcanic cones (altitude, 1,322 m), which form a mountainous relief. There are frequent earthquakes. The island is surrounded by coral reefs. The climate is moist tropical. The windward sides of the southeastern slopes are covered with a moist tropical forest with valuable trees. The lee side is covered by savannas. There are plantations of sugarcane, banana, cotton, and coconut palm. Gold and manganese ore are mined; there is a timber industry. The principal city and port is Suva.
