Vitiaz Deep-Sea Trench
Vitiaz’ Deep-Sea Trench
the Eastern Melanesian Trench, a depression in the floor of the Pacific along the northern underwater slopes of the Santa Cruz, Anuda (Cherry), Ticopia, and other islands. The length of the trench within the limits of the 5,000-meter isobath is approximately 800 km, and its maximum depth is 6,150 m. With the Western Melanesian Trench, it forms a single system of trenches along the exterior side of the Melanesian island festoons. The Vitiaz’ Trench was discovered in 1958 by a Soviet expedition on the research vessel Vitiaz’.
