Penrose, Richard A. F. (Alexander Fullerton), Jr.

(1863–1931) geologist; born in Philadelphia, Pa. He surveyed mineral deposits in Texas (1888) and Arkansas (1889), then taught economic geology at the University of Chicago (1892–1911). He investigated the Cripple Creek, Colo, gold mine for the U.S. Geological Survey (1894), and gained an international reputation in the 1920s for his work on the geology of ores and mining.
