Tikhomirov, Aleksandr Andreevich

 

Born Sept. 19 (Oct. 1), 1850; died Oct. 23, 1931. Russian zoologist.

Tikhomirov graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1872 and from Moscow University in 1876. He became a professor at Moscow University in 1888 and was the director of the university’s zoological museum from 1896 to 1904. He was superintendent of the Moscow School District from 1911 to 1917. Tikhomirov’s main works dealt with the anatomy, embryology, and physiology of the Asiatic silkworm and with silkworm breeding. In 1886 he discovered artificial parthenogenesis in Asiatic silkworm eggs. He attacked Darwinism in several works on zoology, anthropology, and general biology.
