rural sociology
rural sociology a branch of sociology concerned with the study of rural communities and agriculture. Rural sociology has existed as a clearly identified subdiscipline only in the US, where it was encouraged by state policies. Elsewhere the study of rural communities and agriculture has more often been subsumed within other areas of inquiry, including economic anthropology, peasant studies, and development studies.
