Bernburg has a large soda industry, machine-building industry, the most productive cement factory in the GDR, and sugar industry. Potassium salt and rock salt are mined in the surrounding area. Bernburg is the site of the Central Scientific Research Institute for Plant Selection and of an agricultural institute.
