Townshend Charles Related to Townshend Charles: Townshend ActsTown·shend T0294400 (toun′zənd), Charles 1725-1767. British politician who as chancellor of the exchequer (1766) sponsored the Townshend Acts (1767), which levied duties on many items imported to the American colonies. Strong resistance to the acts led to the repeal of all the duties except for the tax on tea. |
