Townsend discharge[′tau̇n·zənd ‚dis‚chärj] (electronics) A discharge which occurs at voltages too low for it to be maintained by the electric field alone, and which must be initiated and sustained by ionization produced by other agents; it occurs at moderate pressures, above about 0.1 torr, and is free of space charges. |
