Taman

a stanitsa (large cossack village) in Temriuk Raion, Krasnodar Krai; port on the Gulf of Taman’ in the Kerch’ Strait. In the sixth century B.C., the city of Hermonassa, a part of the Bosporus state, was founded here by the Greeks. From the late tenth to the early 12th century, the city of Tmutarakan’, the center of the Tmutarakan’ Principality, stood on the same site. The Genoese settled here in the 13th century, and in the late 15th century Taman’ became a Turkish fortress. Later, by the terms of the Kuchuk Kainarji Treaty of 1774, Taman’ passed into Russia’s hands. Black Sea Cossacks settled here in 1792 and founded the stanitsa of Taman’.
