Bendigo (bĕn`dĭgō), city, Victoria, SE Australia, since 1994 amalgamated with neighboring areas to form Greater Bendigo (2016 pop. 110,477). Founded in 1851 during the gold rush, Bendigo was the center for the greatest goldfield in Victoria. Mining continues, but the city is now an industrial, railroad, tourist, and commercial center in a livestock and dairy-farming region.
