Veterinary Preparations, Institute of

(full name, State Scientific Control Institute of Veterinary Preparations, GNKI), a scientific control organization founded in Moscow in 1931. It is part of the USSR Ministry of Agriculture. In 1969 GNKI included 19 laboratories and departments, including seven laboratories of biological preparations—preparations to combat viruses, foot-and-mouth disease, anthrax and listerellosis, paratyphoid and leptospirosis, and pasteurellosis and erysipelas and anaerobic and diagnostic preparations; eight other laboratories for chemical-therapeutic and anthelmintic preparations, antibiotics, biogenic stimulants, biochemistry, radiobiology, economics, and preparations for artificial insemination and an analytical laboratory; a field office to combat foot-and-mouth disease; a field office to control poultry diseases; and technical science laboratory and department of nutrient media. The institute exercises state control over the manufacture and marketing of veterinary biological preparations in the USSR. It does research on the selection, maintenance, and storage of industrial and standard vaccinal strains of microbial cultures and viruses used to make biological preparations. GNKI tests newly proposed veterinary biological and chemotherapeutic preparations, improves existing biological and chemotherapeutic veterinary preparations, and works out methods for standardizing, controlling, and applying them. GNKI directs research in factories that manufacture biologicals. The institute has a postgraduate division and publishes scientific works.
