Standing Medical Advisory Committee

Standing Medical Advisory Committee

A statutory advisory non-departmental public body (quango) established by legislation in 1949 as one of 9 separate bodies to advise the Minister and the (then) Central Health Services Committee on matters relating to services provided under the National Health Service Act 1946. While the SMAC and the Standing Nursing and Midwifery Advisory Committee (SNMAC) had provided authoritative guidance to the DH and Ministers, other advisory mechanisms with professional medical, nursing and midwifery representation existed. Both were disbanded in 2005.
