runway-edge light system runway-edge light systemPlan view of runway-edge lighting layout.Runway-edge lights are used to outline the edges of runways during periods of darkness or restricted visibility conditions. The runway-edge lights are white, except on instrument runways where yellow replaces white on the last 2000 ft, or half the runway length, whichever is less, to form a caution zone for landings. The intensity of the lights can be controlled, and the systems themselves are also classified according to the intensity—high-intensity, medium-intensity, and low-intensity runway lighting. Low-intensity runway lighting has one intensity setting. The units are lightweight and mounted in a frangible manner. |
