penetration test[‚pen·ə′trā·shən ‚test] (engineering) A test to determine the relative values of density of noncohesive sand or silt at the bottom of boreholes. penetration testA test which measures the relative density of silt or sand at the bottom of a borehole. Also See dynamic penetration test and static penetration test.penetration testA test of a network's vulnerabilities by having an authorized individual actually attempt to break into the network. The tester may undertake several methods, workarounds and "hacks" to gain entry, often initially getting through to one seemingly harmless section, and from there, attacking more sensitive areas of the network.
