Abrui

Abrui

The leader of an uprising in the 580’s of the poorest strata of the populace of lower Sogd (present-day Bukhara Oblast) against the local landowning and trade aristocracy. Having taken Paikend, Abrui, in the words of Narshakhi, “began to cruelly rule this region.” Many dehwars (here, members of the feudal elite) and wealthy merchants fled to Semirech’e; they turned to the Turkish ruler, Kara-Churin, for help and around 585 his troops smashed the rebellion. Abrui was executed.
