Thaton
Thaton
a city in southern Burma in the Tenasserim (Taninthayi) Region. A major center of the Mon civilization.
Thaton was founded in the first centuries of the Common Era. By the middle of the first millennium, it had become one of Southeast Asia’s leading ports on the route from India to the Far East. By the tenth century, Thaton, then one of the most important Mon cities in southern Burma, became the capital of the united Mon state of Ramanna Desa. In the 11th century, the city was captured and plundered by the Burmese king Anawrahta. Many of the Mons taken into captivity at that time were moved to the Burmese state of Pagan.
