Pritchard, James Bennett

(1909– ) archaeologist; born in Louisville, Ky. His lifelong study of the Middle East included expeditions to Jericho (1951), el-Jib (1956–62), and Tell es-Sa'idiyeh, Jordan (1964–67), and yielded such publications as The Ancient Near East (2 vols. 1958–1975). He ended a long teaching career in the U.S.A. and the Middle East at the University of Pennsylvania (1962–78).
