Service, John Stewart

(1909– ) foreign service officer; born in Chengtu, China. He was raised by his missionary parents in China, where he worked for the U.S. foreign service (1933–45), unsuccessfully recommending America's early recognition of the communists. The government dismissed him for disloyalty for passing documents to the leftist journal Amerasia (1945); he was reinstated by the Supreme Court, but retired to teach at the University of California: Berkeley (1962).
