sunburst pattern

sunburst pattern

Ophthalmology A pattern seen on funduscopy of the retina in stage III proliferative retinopathy of sickle cell disease, characterized by areas of retinal pigment epithelial hyperplasia, which develop after intra– and subneural retinal hemorrhage, more commonly in Hb SS disease than in SC disease. See Proliferative sickle retinopathy. Cf Seafan pattern Radiology A descriptor for the appearance of a periosteal reaction, in which dense filiform spiculations are perpendicular to the periosteum, classically in bone infiltration by typical and parosteal osteosarcomas, as these usually evoke a minimal periosteal reaction; 'sunburst' also refers to irradiating spiculation of the ileal bone around the acetabulum in Voorhoeve syndrome–osteopathia striata.
