Voroshilovgrad State Regional Electric Power Plant

one of the largest steam power plants in the USSR, located in the city of Schast’e, Voroshilovgrad Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. The power plant was constructed in three phases. The first phase (seven turbine units rated at 100 megawatts each and 14 boiler units, each with a steam-generating capacity of 230 tons per hour) was completed between 1956 and 1958; the second phase (four power units rated at 200 megawatts each) went into operation between 1961 and 1963; and the third phase (four units similar to the units in the second phase) was put into service between 1967 and 1969. On Jan. 1, 1970, the power plant had a power capacity of 2.3 hectowatts (2.3 million kilowatts) and an average annual power output of 17 terawatt-hours (17 billion kilowatt-hours) utilizing 7,400 hours of installed capacity. Coal from the Donets Basin and gas from the Stavropol’ deposits serve as the main fuels for the power plant. The circulating water is cooled by cooling ponds measuring 6.5 sq km. The power plant is provided with electronic regulators for the automatic regulation and control of the technical equipment. The power plant is part of the Donbassenergo system, through which it is connected to the unified power system of the south.
