SUMO3

SUMO3

A gene on chromosome 21q22.3 that encodes a broadly expressed ubiquitin-like protein, which can be covalently attached to proteins as a monomer or a lysine-linked polymer. This post-translational modification on lysine residues of protein (sumolyation) plays a crucial role in a number of cellular processes, including nuclear transport, DNA replication and repair, mitosis and signal transduction. SUMO3 interacts with SAE2, UBE2I and USP25; it is activated when its precursor form is cleaved by SENP1, SENP2 or SENP5. It is also a less preferred gene symbol for what is now designated as SUMO2, see there.
