Automatic Answer-Back
Automatic Answer-Back
a device for automatically transmitting an abbreviated or conventional message through a subscriber’s telegraphic channels. The automatic answer-back can transmit messages in the subscriber’s absence. In order to check the connection with the called party through the subscriber’s telegraph station, the calling party before and after working the apparatus presses the interrogative (“Who’s there?”) button on the off-on mechanism and automatically receives through the telegraphic channel the last name, number, or agreed-upon name of the called subscriber. The automatic answer-back is used not only in subscriber telegraph service but also in the automatic “direct connections” telegraphic network.
