vigorous exercise vigorous exercise Exercise intense enough to cause sweating and/or heavy breathing, and/or increase of heart rate to near maximum. Vigorous exercise is formally defined as that which requires > 6 METs (metabolic equivalent of O2 consumption), and includes: • Brisk walking—6.5–8 km (4–5 mph); • Lap swimming; • Roller-blading—2–3 hours/week; • Running—9.5–11 km/hour (6–7 mph); • Shoveling snow; • Singles tennis.
