Rumford fireplace
Rumford fireplaceAn efficient fireplace invented by Benjamin Thompson (1753–1814), originally of Massachusetts, who later achieved distinction as Count Rumford. His innovative fireplace design increased the efficiency of radiated heat and lessened the emitted smoke, benefits that were achieved by significantly reducing the size of the massive colonial fireplace opening and by introducing a constriction in the chimney directly above the hearth so as to increase the draft through the chimney. |
