Serpukhov Radio Observatory
a scientific institution of the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. The observatory was established in 1957 in the city of Pushchino.
The Serpukhov Radio Observatory has three principal instruments. The broadband, crossed-antenna DKR-1000 radio telescope is directed at the meridian; it has an operating frequency range of 40 to 120 megahertz (MHz) and an aperture area of 80,000 m2. A second radio telescope, also directed at the meridian, consists of a broadside array with an operating frequency of 102 MHz and an aperture area of 72,000 m2. The steerable RT-22 radio telescope consists of a parabolic reflector 22 m in diameter; the telescope has an operating frequency range of 1.5 to 40 gigahertz and an aperture area of 380 m2.
The Serpukhov Radio Observatory is principally engaged in radio-astronomical study of the planets and interplanetary space, pulsars, the Galaxy, and the metagalaxy, particularly in regard to the radiation of spectral lines. It is also concerned with the design of radio telescopes and receiving-and-recording equipment. As a result of research conducted at the observatory, the outer corona of the sun and the radio lines of excited hydrogen were discovered, and the surface temperature of Venus was determined.
