Snell, Bertrand Hollis

(1870–1958) U.S. representative; born in Colton, N.Y. A graduate of Amherst College, he started working as a lumberjack in 1894, becoming the owner of his own lumber company by 1904, before diversifying into other businesses. In the U.S. House of Representatives (Rep., N.Y.; 1915–39), he chaired the House Rules Committee in the 1920s, often frustrating the Democrats. As minority leader during the 1930s, he fought against the New Deal. Afterwards he ran the Potsdam Courier-Freeman (N.Y.).
