Sumbar
a river in the Turkmen SSR and Iran, partially on the border between the USSR and Iran; a right tributary of the Atrek. The Sumbar is 245 km long and drains an area of approximately 8,300 sq km. It originates in the Kopetdag mountain range in Iran. The lower course dries up for two to five months a year. The river is fed mainly by rain and groundwater. Its main tributary is the Chandyr, on the left. The Sumbar is used for irrigation; subtropical fruits are grown in the river valley.
