primary distribution Primary distributionSale of a new issue of stock or bonds, as distinguished from a secondary distribution.Primary DistributionThe sale of a new issue on the primary market. That is, the seller in a primary distribution is the issuer. Most primary distributions are placed through underwriting. The primary distribution can at times be more volatile than trading the secondary market because it is difficult to determine the underlying value of new issues. In any case, the primary distribution accounts for only a portion of trade on a given trading day.
