Pechora Sea

Pechora Sea

the name of the southeastern part of the Barents Sea between the islands of Kolguev and Vaigach. It reaches depths of 210 m. Water temperature in the summer is 9°C and salinity is 23–30 parts per thousand. Tides are irregular semidiurnal and vary from 0.5 to 1.8 m. In the southern part of the sea, there is the eastward-flowing Kolguev Current, whose extension is the Novaia Zemlia Current. The currents are generated by the influx of the Pechora River into the sea. From November through June the sea is covered with floating ice. Cod, white whales, and seals are of commercial importance.
