Rear. (1)
In the broad sense, the entire territory of a country at war except for the actual battle zone. The rear includes the country’s civilian population and economic resources. In a narrower sense, the term refers to the aggregate of forces and facilities that provide rear services support to the army and navy in peace and war.
(2) The side of a rank, battle formation, or operational formation that is opposite to the front.
