The composition of peat gas depends on the moisture content of the peat used: C0₂ (8.3–9.4 percent by volume), C_mH, (0.4 percent), 0₂(0.1–0.2 percent), CO (25–27 percent), H₂ (16–17 percent), CH₄(2.3–3.0 percent), and N₂ (44.5–45.5 percent). The heat of combustion is 1,450–1,550 Calories per m³ (6.15–6.5 megajoules per m³). The production of peat gas in the USSR is declining as a result of the increased production of natural gas.
