"Poor fellow, he's left MITand gone into the Real World." Used pejoratively by those notin residence there. In conversation, talking of someone whohas entered the Real World is not unlike speaking of adeceased person. It is also noteworthy that on the campus ofCambridge University in England, there is a gaily-paintedlamp-post which bears the label "REALITY CHECKPOINT". Itmarks the boundary between university and the Real World;check your notions of reality before passing. This joke isfunnier because the Cambridge "campus" is actually coextensivewith the centre of Cambridge.
