Rudd
Rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus), a freshwater fish of the family Cyprinidae. Body length, up to 36 cm; weight, up to 1 kg. The body is somewhat laterally compressed, with relatively large scales. The paired and anal fins are bright red. The body coloration is usually silvery; large individuals are golden. The rudd is distributed in Europe, Asia Minor, and Middle Asia; however, it is absent from rivers that empty into the Arctic Ocean and is rarely found in the Severnaia Dvina. Spawning, which occurs in early summer, is in batches. The rudd feeds on plants and invertebrates; it sometimes preys upon the young of other fishes. It is of little commercial value. In the Far East the dace Leuciscus brandti is also called rudd; it inhabits seas in the Far East and has some commercial value. rudd
