Sulfoxidesulfoxide[‚səl′fäk‚sīd]Sulfoxideany organosulfur compound containing a group bonded to two organic radicals. Sulfoxides are soluble in alcohol and ether; the lower members of the homologous series are also soluble in water. With strong acids sulfoxides form saltlike adducts, or addition products, such as R2SO·HCl. Sulfoxides are usually obtained by the oxidation of organic sulfides, or thioethers. Dimethyl sulfoxide is used as a solvent. Sulfoxides were discovered by A. M. Zaitsev in 1886. sulfoxidesul·fox·ide(sŭl-fok'sīd),sulf·ox·ide(sŭl-fok'sīd)Synonym(s): sulphoxide. |
