Established: 1937.
Location:On Hatteras Island on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Activities:Boating, canoeing, hiking, beachcombing, fishing, educational programs.
Special Features:Refuge is home to more than 365 species of birds, 25 species of mammals, 24 species of reptiles, and 5 species of amphibians..
Habitats: 5,834 acres of ocean beach, barrier dunes, salt flats, salt marshes, and fresh and brackish water ponds. Site also include 25,700 acres of Proclamation Boundary waters.
Access: Open year round during daylight hours.
Wild life: Ducks, geese, tundra swans, herons, egrets, terns, piping plovers, ospreys, peregrine falcons, loggerhead sea turtles, and muskrats.
