triptans

A group of drugs, known as selective serotonin agonists, with effects similar to those of the neurotransmitter SEROTONIN. Their action is uncertain, but they are thought to act by tightening the branches of the carotid arteries that supply the scalp and brain. They may also act on the main sensory nerve of the face and head. They are effective in controlling the symptoms of MIGRAINE, especially if supplemented by the gastrokinetic drug trimebutine. The group includes almotriptan (Almogran), frovatriptan (Migard), naratriptan (Naramig), rizatriptan (Maxalt), sumatriptan (Imigran), zolmitriptan (Zomig).
