A position adopted by a patient with extreme respiratory distress, who sits upright and leans forward, resting his or her hands on the knees.
 
Neurology
A nuchal-spinal sign in which the sitting position requires a rigid spine and both arms extended towards the back for support, typically seen in children with non-paralytic poliomyelitis.

tripod position

A position that may be assumed during respiratory distress to facilitate the use of respiratory accessory muscles. The patient sits leaning forward, with hands placed on the bed or a table with arms braced. See also: position
