Pribnow box

a NUCLEOTIDE sequence found in prokaryotic PROMOTERS that is required for initiation of TRANSCRIPTION. It allows the RNA POLYMERASE to position itself correctly at the transcription start site on DNA. The CONSENSUS SEQUENCE is 5′-TATAAT-3′.

Sometimes it is called the -10 sequence, because of its location UPSTREAM of the transcription start. The Pribnow box was named after D Pribnow, who first pointed out such sequences.
