sulfadiazine [sul″fah-di´ah-zēn] a sulfonamide used, frequently in combination with other sulfonamides, in the treatment of infections due to susceptible organisms, including nocardiosis, toxoplasmosis, otitis media caused by susceptible strains of Haemophilus influenzae,streptococci, and pneumococci, and malaria caused by chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum. It is administered orally as the base or intravenously as the sodium salt.
