Sergei Nikolaevich Glinka
Glinka, Sergei Nikolaevich
Born July 5 (16), 1775 (according to some sources, 1776), at the Sutoki estate in present-day Smolensk Oblast; died Apr. 5 (17), 1847, in St. Petersburg. Russian writer and journalist. Brother of F. N. Glinka.
Glinka was a pupil at the First Cadet School and fought in the Patriotic War of 1812. He published the journal Russkii vestnik (1808-20 and 1824), advancing monarchist and nationalist positions. He was a censor on the Moscow Censorship Committee from 1827 to 1830. He was author of the historical plays Natal’ia, the Boyar’s Daughter (1806), Minin (1809), and others, in addition to the 14-part History of Russia, poems, and historical and moral tales. He also published Notes on the Year 1812 (1836) and Notes on Moscow and on Foreign Events From the End of 1812 to the Middle of 1815 (1837).
