A popular term for a marked increase in government funding of an academic department in a field of research after a person in the department has been awarded a Nobel prize, or the department has acquired prestige for other reasons.Named after physicist Carlo Rubbia, who won a Nobel prize in Physics; Italy’s Instituto Nazionale per Fisica Nucleare, where he worked, initially had a miniscule budget that increased exponentially after he won.
