1817–81, American author and publisher, b. Portsmouth, N.H. He was the junior partner of Ticknor and Fields, noted Boston publishing house in the mid-19th cent. He edited (1861–70) the Atlantic Monthly with notable success.

 became Ticknor's partners in Boston, and their firm is best known as Ticknor and Fields. They published the works of many of the famous Americans of the day, including Longfellow, Lowell, and O. W. Holmes, and their offices were the meeting place of literary men. From 1854 to 1864 the firm published the Atlantic Monthly and the North American Review. Ticknor was the first American publisher to pay foreign authors for the rights to their works.

Ticknor, William Davis

(1810–64) publisher; born in Lebanon, N.H. In 1832 he founded the Boston firm that, with the able partnership of James Fields, became one of the most distinguished American publishing companies.
