Sergei Aleksandrovich Fedotov

Fedotov, Sergei Aleksandrovich

 

Born Mar. 19, 1931, in Leningrad. Soviet geophysicist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1970).

Fedotov graduated from Moscow State University in 1953. From 1957 to 1971 he worked at the O. Iu. Shmidt Institute of Earth Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1971 he became director of the Institute of Volcanology of the Far East Scientific Center of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1975 he was elected vice-president of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior. His principal works deal with the internal structure and seismicity of the earth, properties of the earth’s mantle, the mechanism of deep magmatic and volcanic activity, and long-term earthquake predictions.

Fedotov has been awarded the Order of the October Revolution.
