Sergeevich, Vasilii Ivanovich

 

Born 1832 in Orel; died Nov. 26, 1910. Historian of Russian law; representative of the state school of jurisprudence in Russia.

Sergeevich began teaching state law at Moscow University in 1868, becoming a professor there in 1871. In 1872 he became a professor at the University of St. Petersburg. He defended his master’s dissertation, “The Veche and the Prince: The Russian State System and Government in the Era of the Riurikovichi Princes,” in 1867, and his doctoral dissertation, “The Task and Methods of the Political Sciences,” in 1871. Sergeevich’s works also investigated Old Russian landownership and serfdom and various categories of the rural population.
