prevailing windsThe winds produced by the global patterns of barometric pressure, both at the surface and aloft. The prevailing winds are influenced by the earth's rotation (Coriolis effect). The prevailing winds are the polar high, polar easterlies, subpolar lows, westerlies, subtropical high-horse latitudes, and tradewinds in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. These northern and southern prevailing wind bands are mirror images of each other. The equatorial low doldrums are found along a belt near the equator. See planetary winds. |
