Ruapehu
(ro͞oəpā`ho͞o), active volcano, 9,175 ft (2,797 m) high, on North Island, New Zealand; highest point of North Island. Ruapehu's most recent large eruptions were in 1995 and 1996. It is part of Tongariro National Park, which includes other volcanic peaks, active and inactive, and is known for its ski resorts.Ruapehu

Mount Ruapehu is truncated, with a main crater and two smaller craters formed inside the main crater by later explosions. It is composed of andesites. The lower slopes are covered with forests of Nothofagus and Libocedrus and with shrubs. The upper slopes—above 1,700–2,000 m—are covered with snow and small glaciers. The last eruption was in 1971.
