It covers areas between the 80° latitude and the poles. The northern pole area is divided into two parts by the 180° meridian. The western half is designated by the letter Y, and that containing the east longitudes is given the grid designation Z. The south polar is similarly designated by the letters A and B. In the north polar area, the 180° to 0° meridian coincides with an even 100-km vertical grid line, and the 90° to 90° meridian line with a horizontal grid line. In the Y- designated half, the 100-km columns at right angles are lettered alphabetically J to Z, starting at 80° N latitude and progressing toward the east. In the Z-designated area, the lettering is from A to R. In both cases, the letters I, O, D, E, M, N, V, and W are omitted. The normal method of quoting a reference on this grid is to give the letters identifying the 100-km square in which the point falls, followed by a group of coordinates representing the metric distances of its eastings and its northings from the southwest corner of the square. |
